Installing or Replacing Interior or Exterior Doors

Most doors today are prefabricated in factories and come preframed. These prehung doors make installation easier. However, it doesn't mean that hanging door is fool-proof.

Installation errors are common and these could lead to binding, stripped hinge-screw holes, gaps, twisted frames and uneven reveals. Improperly installed sliding doors will drag, won't glide smoothly, or perhaps not slide at all. Drafts around exterior doors, as well as water damage to the sill, frame and floor are also possible indications of a poor or compromised inaugural placement.

Exterior doors need to be fitly installed to be sound, energy efficient and to provide maximum safety.

Entry Doors

Entry doors come in a wide array of options and styles that will compliment the design of your home and add to its curb appeal. You can also have your entry door custom made to your specifications. Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting an entrance door:
  • Safety - Sidelights let light in through glass panels beside the door. If you are choosing this style for your entrance look door with a wide latch jamb or stiffener. This will allow you to put 21/2" screws in the striker plate. A narrow stiffener will force you to put in shorter screws that could allow the door to be kicked in.
  • Proper Installation - Entry doors are heavier than interior doors and because of this the hinge side of the door and frame bears a massive strain. Installation errors could cause the door to bind. The reveals will often tell you if something is not lined up correctly. Have doors professionally installed.
  • Adjustable Thresholds - It is especially important to purchase doors with adjustable thresholds in newer homes. Wood often shrinks post installation and leaves a air gap at the bottom of the door. You can raise the threshold easily if it is adjustable and thereby eliminate this energy leak.

Interior Door Installation

Measure the rough opening (RO) for the door. The door you order should be roughly 2 1/2 inches smaller than the RO's height and width. Depending on the thickness of wall you will need to use framing jamb stock that is 4 9/16 inches or 4 7/8inches wide. Ideally the door frame's side jambs should rest solidly on the flooring or subflooring so that they don't gravitate down later on.

In order for the door to swing freely there should be a 1/4 inch of clearance between the bottom of the door and the finished flooring.

If your are renovating and some of your existing interior doors are different sizes, now is your chance to replace those doors and trims. Especially in a bedroom hallway that has a number of doors, the head casings of the doors should all be the same height. This symmetry is aesthetically pleasing, whereas a hallway with different doors heights can make a home look off square and cockeyed.
